After a successful exhibition titled "Opening Lines: Telegraph in Berlin" at the Milchhof Pavilion, Telegraph is happy to announce a second itinerary of their first overseas project that will take place at the private residence of a wonderful collectors duo that has left a bold mark in Detroit's artist community, and is continuing to do so even after their move to Germany a couple of years ago.

While the pavilion's design allowed the show to be accessible 24/7 throughout the run of the show, the exhibition in Esslingen will be open to the public only after making a prior appointment.

The seven artists of the Telegraph Art Collective originally met in Detroit, from there members spread to distant points around the United States. The collective has essentially functioned as a running conversation, typically conducted at long range. Occasionally the group organizes exhibitions and presentations that explore ideas of common interest such as architecture, history and process. Works gathered for these exhibitions also question and examine the boundaries of fine art, craft and design. Telegraph made its debut at Chicago’s Stray Show in May 2004 and has since shown together in Toronto, Kansas City, and various Detroit-area locations.

Opening Lines: Telegraph in Berlin, will take place at the Pavilion at Milchhof and represents the group’s first European venture. The exhibition will take place in a partially glass-walled pavilion that measures 14,00m long by 2,55m wide by approximately 3,00m tall. Access to the pavilion’s interior is only possible at the opening reception, after which works are to be viewed from the exterior.

The seven artists of Telegraph plan to create an exhibition that takes into consideration the specific architecture and limited accessibility of the pavilion. These parameters have acted as creative prompts that have guided what the artists made and how and where these objects are installed. Art work will range from sculpture to paintings and drawings that employ a wide range of materials and techniques.

Telegraph in Dallas and beyond

We are happy to announce that Telegraph - after a hiatus of more than one year - has planned two projects for this year. The first is our exhibition in the Free Museum of Dallas from February 8 - February 25.
The opening will be February 8 from 5 - 7 PM.

We are currently also working on an editioned set of works by all the artists of Telegraph, which will be available sometime later this Spring. We hope that all who have taken interest in our work will consider purchasing a set that will help us to realize our second project, a show in the Pavillion of Milchhof in Berlin, that will be part of the "Kunstherbst" events in Fall in the city.

The fruits of an on-going collaboration between Fabio J. Fernández and Tom Lauerman, Sculptures in Love with Architecture presents a series of small scale ceramic pieces that reflect the artists thoughts on the forms, concepts, history and humor in architecture and the built environment.

The title references the book Architectures in Love, an enigmatic sketchbook/journal by John Hejduk that has been a shared influence on both artists. Many of the works were conceived with Hejduk's writing in mind, particularly his investigations of the emotional capacities of architecture. From there the circle of allowable inspirations grew to include other architects and artists whom the pair look to: Félix Candela, Eduardo Chillida, Eladio Dieste, Louis Kahn, Mies van der Rohe, and Tony Smith to mention a few. Often, the process of making began with the mailing/emailing of drawings, notes and models back and forth between the artist's studios, at times located in Boston, Chicago or Dallas. The forms that emerged from this method of communication explore and exploit the properties of ceramics - the actual making incorporates the range from elemental technology like hands and sandpaper to advanced prototyping and mold making.

A show of ceramic work at Artworks, Trenton

Much of the work in Around the Campfire is installation-based and employs mixed media as well as clay. The exhibition both pays homage to Trenton’s rich industrial history as home to dozens of commercial potteries in the 19 th century, and charts a path into the future of creative ceramics in the 21 st.

Around the Campfire has been planned to coincide with the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts annual conference, taking place this year in Philadelphia. The show will be on view March 6 through April 17at Artworks’ main gallery in downtown Trenton.

“In the big picture realm of design and architecture, I wanted tofind out what clay artists were thinking,” says Reichard, curator of the show as well as a participant. “The title refers to playing house with friends in the ‘wilderness’ and re-enacting a way of lifethat’s decidedly more survivalist than ours is now. The playful aspect of the campfire is that you start from scratch, but with a goal and a set of parameters,” much like the artists in the show, she says.

Campfires are comforting, but in the wilderness, as the sole source of warmth and cooking heat, they distill our needs and desires downto what is really important, Reichard says. “The artists in this show have decided what’s important, and their objects are the telling excerpts of their complete worldview.”

There will be a public reception on Saturday, March 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. with music by the band "WINDJAMMER," featuring Andrew Weiss, who has either been a member of or worked with the Rollins Band, Ween, Yoko Ono, Pigface and Café’ Tacuba among others.

Hartmut Austen wins Kresge Artist Fellowship Award

Hartmut Austen is the recipient of one of the inaugural Kresge Artist Fellowships in the Visual Arts.

The Fellowships, each including a $25,000 prize funded by The Kresge Foundation, are awarded annually to visual, performing and literary artists and are the largest such awards available to individual artists in metropolitan Detroit.

The 2009 Kresge Artist Fellowship Panel that selected the fellows includes: Susan Bandes, director of Kresge Art Museum at Michigan State University, Lansing, Michigan; Aaron Betsky, director of the Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati, Ohio; Dick Goody, director of the Oakland University Art Gallery, Rochester, MI; Lorna Simpson, artist, Brooklyn, NY; and Richard Tuttle, artist, New York, NY and Abiquiu, New Mexico.

The Seattle Art Dealers Association is pleased to announce that its members will join together during the month of July to spotlight the work of emerging artists or artists new to their galleries. Dealers encourage viewers to participate in a special midsummer gallery walk on Saturday July 18 from 11-5pm. Many of the artists whose work is featured will be present at venues from 2-4pm. SADA Introductions 2009 is an effort to showcase the work of artists who may be unfamiliar to the local audience.

Summer is often considered a sleepy season for the art world in other parts of the country, but it is one of the busiest seasons for SADA. With terrific weather, locals stay in town and the city becomes an exciting cultural destination for collectors from all parts of the world. In early June, collectors, curators and gallery owners often head to Europe for the Venice Biennale, Art Basel, and other events. But July is a mainstay for the Seattle Art Dealers, so on July 18 they will take advantage of this time to present untested or new talent. These linked exhibitions mark SADA’s ongoing commitment to bring new artists and their work to the attention of the community. A new round of Introductions will be scheduled in the future. For the tenth year, Clark County Parks and Recreation will host the “3-D Invitational” exhibit, beginning Feb. 2, at the Clark County Government Center Rotunda Gallery, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway. The group exhibition features original three-dimensional pieces created for the show by artists Keith Conley, Curtis Fairman, Emily Kennerk and Brent Sommerhauser. Receptions for the artists will take place during First Friday events from 6 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 6 and March 6. The exhibit continues at the gallery through March 20. Attendees can park at the Government Center, view the exhibit and then take a free shuttle to other First Friday venues.

The four artists selected are all strongly compelled by form and played that out in these works made specifically for this show in an array of materials. The result is a collection of work that at first glance is playful but ultimately reveals the darker mood of the moment we all find ourselves in.

Keith Conley is an associate professor at the College of Southern Nevada, where he teaches sculpture. He will be in residence as part of the Goldwell Residency Program in 2009. Curtis Fairman’s work was recently included in “Las Vegas Diaspora,” an exhibit curated by Dave Hickey at the Las Vegas Art Museum. The exhibit also traveled to the Laguna Art Museum. Emily Kennerk is a recent arrival to the valley and is an associate professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she teaches sculpture. The Indianapolis Museum of Art presented a solo exhibit of her work in 2007. Brent Sommerhauser has exhibited nationally and internationally and is a member of Telegraph, an exciting artist collective. Since becoming a resident of Nevada his work has been recognized by the Nevada Arts Council with two Artist Fellowship honorable mention awards and a Jackpot Grant.

Comprised of seven members with diverse disciplinary backgrounds, TELEGRAPH is an artist collective that originated in Detroit. Their members are now scattered across the country in Birmingham, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Fort Collins, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Thus, the name Telegraph describes both their long-distance method of collaboration and pays homage to Telegraph Road, the ubiquitous Detroit thoroughfare. In mid-October Eastern Michigan University will become the object of Telegraph’s artistic inquiry. The artists will not bring finished works to Ypsilanti, but with parts, pieces, sketches and notes in hand, they will descend on campus and spend three days creating site-specific work. The detritus, people and resources of EMU and vicinity will become both their subject and media as they engage with the area’s built and open spaces.

Starting in July, Hartmut Austen will be one of the featured artists in mark(s), the online literary and visual arts zine, edited by Deb King.
There will be 15 new works, mostly from the past two years.

Hartmut is also part of "Moving Walls", a project organized by Jef Bourgeau, director of the Museum of New Art in Pontiac, Mich. and Galerie Eva Bracke in Berlin. Several Berlin artists selected by Eva Bracke currently show their work in MONA, while the Detroit artists will present new work in Berlin this November.

This exhibition compiles works of art that reflect concepts of dynamic and open systems, while demonstrating the ability of spatial art forms to make physical such concepts. Bridging techniques and processes from multiple fields of art and design, the artwork consists of a wide variety of materials and forms, functioning as models of geometries, systems, and structures in flux and flow.

Capricious and Mercurial Systems will include works by Isidro Blasco, Diana Cooper, Ellen Driscoll, Kenji Fujita, Julia Klein, Tom Lauerman, William Niemeier, Margie Neuhaus and Scott Wolniak.

I thought it would be interesting to hear what you guys are currently reading. We have talked about the plan to share more of each others thinking and work process and for me it has become a nice routine to frequently check in with flickr to see if Tom or Brent or anybody else has uploaded new images from the studio. We also talked about exploring to do collaborative drawing. But how about words? Reading "Vermeer in Bosnia" by Lawrence Weschler, I want to say that this is an inspiring, thought provoking book, although I'm not even finished reading it. The first, title giving piece is an elegantly written essay mixing small observations in paintings by Johannes Vermeer with documentations of the brutal war raging in the middle of Europe in the mid-Nineties. The portrait of Roman Polanski, written for the "New Yorker" (where it first appeared together with a portrait image by Richard Avedon) , is a mesmerizing account of the wrestling Weschlers with Polanski about the question how e.g. horrific real life experiences in Polanski's life intersect with certain basic themes that seem to appear over and over again in his films (Polanski mostly denies it saying that he was always more influenced by films he saw as a young boy).
